Work of the Week - Krzysztof Penderecki: A sea of dreams did breathe on me...

On the 14th January 2011, the World Premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's A sea of dreams did breathe on me... will take place at Warsaw's Philharmonic Hall. Soloists Wioletta Chodowicz (soprano), Angieszka Rehlis (mezzo-soprano) and Mariusz Godlewski (baritone) will be joined by Sinfonia Varsovia and the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir for the performance conducted by the great Russian conductor Valery Gergiev.
The Chopin Institute and the Warsaw region commissioned Penderecki to write the piece to celebrate the 200th birthday of Frédéric Chopin. Penderecki uses texts by eight influential Polish poets who helped shape Polish literature in the 19th and 20th century including Tadeusz Miciñski and Zbigniew Herbert. Cyprian Norwird’s poem "Fortepian Szopena" ("Chopin's Piano") plays a key part in Penderecki’s work where it is used in the final part of the three movement work. The poem is an ode to Chopin, which in keeping with in the classic ode, makes allusions to figures from Greek mythology.
For anyone with a further interest in Penderecki's vocal symphonic works, the composer’s 70 minute 7th symphony for five soloists, speaker, three choirs and orchestra Seven Gates of Jerusalem will be performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Mickelthwate at the Centennial Concert in Winnipeg, Canada on 4th February 2011.
