Gabriel Kahane Debuts Andrew Norman's Don't Even Listen at MATA Interval 4.1
Gabriel Kahane premieres Andrew Norman’s new work for voice and piano, Don’t Even Listen, on the MATA Interval concert series on November 17 at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. Taking as its text a quote from Kafka, Don’t Even Listen is described by its composer as a “short, declamatory song” and shares the program with new works from Timo Andres, Yotam Haber, Joseph Hallman, Chris Thile, Shara Worden, Paola Prestini, Brett Banducci and Ted Hearne, all of whom were commissioned by Kahane for this evening’s performance.
Andrew Norman’s meteoric rise as a leading voice among the new generation of American composers continues with his recent selection as one of the four composers commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in honor of their 40th anniversary. Also known as Project 440, the commissioning project is a collaboration between Orpheus and New York’s WQXR radio. The final selections not only reflect the judgment of a panel of experts but also the opinion of the listening public as each of the 60 nominated composers was featured online with composer profiles and audio samples, allowing listeners to weigh in with their opinions and offer feedback over a period of months. Available soon at www.orpheus440.org will be additional audio of the four composers discussing their work-in-progress as well as other 440 events and announcements throughout the season.
