Andrew Norman’s …toward sunrise and the prime of light… Premieres at USC
On October 15, the Calder Quartet performs the world premiere of Andrew Norman’s …toward sunrise and the prime of light... In the new work, the composer has selected musical themes and motifs from his works Sabina and The Companion Guide to Rome and arranged them for string quartet. The quartet performs the work on the occasion of the inauguration of the new president of the University of Southern California, C. L. Max Nikias. An alumnus of USC’s Thornton School of Music, Norman composed this work for the Calder Quartet, taking the title from Virgil’s Aeneid. Its general form is strongly reminiscent of Norman’s Sabina, for solo viola, which also provided the basis of the third movement of Norman’s work for string trio, The Companion Guide to Rome, premiered in the Spring of 2010 by the Scharoun Ensemble at the American Academy in Rome.
