Mikis Theodorakis: 85th Birthday

Mikis Theodorakis occupies a unique position in the musical and intellectual history of our times. His global popularity, the great diversity of his artistic output, his political career and his eventful life have made him one of the most significant figures in contemporary history. His worldwide hit Zorba’s Dance is one of the most popular melodies in existence. Despite the pronounced Greek elements of his music, Mikis Theodorakis remains a cosmopolitan. He has campaigned throughout his life for international human rights, even under the threat of torture and banishment. He is a humanist who has never retreated into his own artistic world, but has continued to intervene in the politics of the day and take up a stand, even during challenging times.

Mikis Theodorakis continues to display a wealth of compositional inspiration and creativeness despite approaching his 85th birthday. He has recently composed a new Solo Concerto for trumpet, a Rhapsody for voice and string orchestra and a song cycle entitled Odysseia to supplement his impressive catalogue of works which already includes over 1000 songs, five operas and oratorios, ballets, film music and symphonies. A whole range of new publications have been issued by Schott Music, Mikis Theodorakis' exclusive publisher, in celebration of his birthday.

We offer our sincere congratulations to our composer Mikis Theodorakis on the occasion of his 85th birthday on 29 July 2010!
