Ojai Music Festival Features Music of Frank Zappa Performed by Ensemble Modern

On June 11 the Ojai Music Festival presents a full day of the music of Frank Zappa, including both an afternoon symposium session and an evening-length concert of his music. The Ensemble Modern, conducted by Brad Lubman, will perform over a dozen Zappa compositions, with selections from Zappa's THE YELLOW SHARK (performed in 1992 by Frank Zappa with Ensemble Modern) and from ENSEMBLE MODERN Plays FRANK ZAPPA: Greggery Peccary & Other Persuasions, recorded at their own expense in 2002. The concert also includes two works by Edgard Varèse, a kindred spirit in musical experimentation and Mr. Zappa's favorite composer since boyhood.

The afternoon symposium on June 11 features: Gail Zappa, wife of Frank Zappa; Ian Underwood, woodwind and keyboard player and early member of The Mothers of Invention; guitar legend Steve Vai, a member of Zappa's band in the 1980s; Todd Yvega, computer music specialist, Synclavier assistant and software developer for Zappa; and Dietmar Wiesner, a founding member of Ensemble Modern.
