Work of the Week - Rodion Shchedrin: Oboe Concerto

On Friday 18 June, Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra will give the world première of Rodion Shchedrin’s highly anticipated Oboe Concerto at the renowned Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The orchestra’s five-year principal oboist Alexei Ogrintchouck will perform the demanding solo part alongside conductor Susanna Mälkki.
Jointly commissioned by some of the best European Orchestras (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Dresdner Philharmonie and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse), the work was completed at the end of 2009 and is formed of three sections, Elegy, Duets and a Finale with Epilogue.
In the solo part it was Shchedrin’s intention to stretch the limitations of the oboe both expressively and technically and the second section expands on this as the orchestra's cor anglais takes a shared role with the soloist, imitating or answering the oboe in an intricate dialogue. Its not just the oboe and cor anglais who are given the opportunity to stand out however, other individual musicians are also required to demonstrate great virtuosity as part of the orchestra, which in Shchedrin's opinion, is not confined to accompanying the soloist.
Further performances of Oboe Concerto will take place on 19 June in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, 2 September as part of the Lucerne Festival 2010, 25 September in Liverpool’s Phiharmonic Hall and on the 1st October with the Dresdner Philharmonie.
