Work of the Week - Heinz Holliger: Gesänge der Frühe

On Good Friday, 2nd April, a concert to celebrate 200 years since Schumann’s birth by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn with the renowned SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble will feature Heinz Holliger’s Gesänge der Frühe at the Beethoven Hall in Bonn, Germany. The work, which takes it title and quotes material from Schumann’s final piano pieces was written as a homage to Schumann and will be conducted by Holliger himself. Gesänge der Frühe will be followed by a rare performance of Schumann’s Missa sacra for soloists, choir and orchestra and with the two works together, the audience will witness a remarkable concert to celebrate Schumann’s life and music.

Composed just four years before Schumann died, Missa sacra was never performed in its entirety during the composer’s life time and it was not until 1861 that the complete work was first heard. In the past it was criticised for not being religious enough because of its romantic musical language and colourful and inventive orchestration, even to this day the work is one of Schumann’s least performed works.

A new study score of Schumann’s Missa sacra was released published as part of the Eulenburg series and the complete edition is published by Schott Music.
