Alvin Singleton’s 'Almost A Boogie' Debuts in Performance by Walden Chamber Players

Ensembles nationwide continue the celebration of Alvin Singleton's 70th birthday and this month the Walden Chamber Players premiere his new work Almost A Boogie on March 7th at Saint Paul’s Church in Brookline, Massachusetts. Long time Singleton collaborator Carman Moore writes of the work, which was commissioned by the Walden Chamber Players with support from the Argosi and Twentieth Century Unlimited Foundations:

Because the composer is such a consummate constructer of musical moments and psycho-sonic structures, Almost A Boogie presents itself as not just “almost,” but a complete drama in musical tones and rhythms. There may be a moment or two when we think we hear a sliver of boogie-woogie piano… maybe the sandpaper clink of a Thelonious Monk-like chord, but once into this very classical piece, we lose all interest in the question of the title. This piece is a score written to dramatize itself. Suspense is everywhere. What will happen next? We begin to care about these musical motives as we might about the characters in an operetta.
