Work of the Week - Nino Rota: Aladino e la lampada magica

Christmas time is often considered a time for children and as we approach the festive period many works for both the young, and the young at heart, are filling the theatres. The long overdue French premiere of Nino Rota’s "lyrical fairytale" Aladin and the Magic Lamp on 17th December by the Opéra National du Rhin at the Théâtre municipal in Colmar is one of these. The 1968 children’s opera based on the well known story is full of varied and colourful music with exciting drama that will take audiences on a magical journey to a mysterious oriental world of veiled princesses and evil wizards.
Under the direction of Vincent Monteil the Ensemble orchestral du Conservatoire de Strasbourg will perform the work around France in Colmar, Mulhouse, Strasbourg and Illkirch until March 2010.
