Schott/EAM Season Preview

The 2009/10 season is upon us! Below is just a sampling of the featured Schott/EAM events happening this season. Throughout the year, you can always check on our upcoming performances by going to our performance calendar on www.eamdllc.com.

Julian Anderson

The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director Franz Welser-Möst present the US premiere of Julian Anderson's Fantasias on November 19 and 21.

Luciano Berio

The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents Luciano Berio's Folk Songs conducted by Gustavo Dudamel on November 12, 14 and 15. Also on the program: Berio's Rendering, based on Schubert's unfinished sketches for, what would have been, his 10th symphony

George Benjamin

Audiences in San Francisco have a great chance to hear the music of George Benjamin this season as the San Francisco Symphony presents seven evenings featuring Benjamin's music, from January 7 through 16, conducted by David Robertson and George Benjamin himself. Works included on the programs are his piano concerto Duet, Ringed by the Flat Horizon, Jubilation and Dance Figures.

Chaya Czernowin

The New England Conservatory features the music of Chaya Czernowin on October 19 as Stephen Drury leads a concert of Czernowin's ensemble works The hour glass bleeds still, Afatsim and Drift. In February, Czernowin's The hour glass bleeds still, Ina, Die Kreuzung- A Crossbreed, Anea Crystal are featured in performances by the Either/Or Ensemble at the Tenri Gallery in New York City.

Peter Maxwell Davies

Peter Maxwell Davies celebrated his 75th birthday on September 8, 2009. His birthday year is marked by performances worldwide including a double BBC Prom on September 8 and performances of his complete string quartet cycle in London's South Bank Centre on October 9, 10 and 11. Davies conducts his Last Door of Light on October 23 and 25 in Salzburg then travels to Glasgow for the world premiere of his new commission for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra entitled Overture, St. Francis of Assisi, as well as a performance of his first large-scale opera, Taverner.

George Gershwin

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Marin Alsop present four nights of the music of George Gershwin on November 12, 13, 14, and 15 in which they perform Rhapsody in Blue; I Got Rhythm Variations; and, in a brand new edition by Elle Fredrickson, Concerto in F, featuring pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Lee Hoiby

Lee Hoiby's Last Letter Home, an acclaimed musical setting of an American soldier's final note to his family receives its world premiere in a new string orchestra incarnation as Steven Townsend leads the orchestra of St. James by the Sea (La Jolla, CA) through the piece on November 8, 2009.

Thomas Larcher

Thomas Larcher sees the world premiere of a new work for piano at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on November 13 in the program Pictures Reframed featuring pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and video artist Robin Rhode.

György Ligeti

The New York Philharmonic presents semi-staged performances of Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre, conducted by Alan Gilbert and directed by Douglas Fitch on May 27, 28 and 29.

The Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera's 09/10 season features three works published by Universal Edition:

• Leoš Janácek's From the House of the Dead, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen and directed by Patrice Chéreau; seven performances from November 12 through December 5

• Dmitri Shostakovich's The Nose, conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by William Kentridge; six performances from March 5 through March 25.

• Alban Berg's Lulu, conducted by James Levine; three performances from May 8 through May 15.

Matthias Pintscher

Pintscher's song cycle for baritone Thomas Hampson, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, sees its world premiere on April 16 at New York City's Symphony Space on the New York Philharmonic's new music series Contact. On November 5, Pintscher's Study II for Treatise on the Veil for string trio is featured at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in a performance at the Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Studio.

Bernard Rands

The Philadelphia-based Network for New Music ensemble presents an evening of the music of Bernard Rands on November 1, featuring his works "now again" - fragments from Sappho, Prelude/sans voix parmi les voix, Scherzi and Walcott Songs.

Wolfgang Rihm

Wolfgang Rihm sees several performances in North America including the US premiere of Memoria - 3 Requiem by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra led by Jaap van Zweden (November 12-14) and on December 2 his Et Lux is performed by the Hilliard Ensemble and the Arditti Quartet at Carnegie Hall.

Los Angeles Philharmonic's Green Umbrella Series Features Andrew Norman, Thomas Adès and Peter Eötvös

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's new music series Green Umbrella presents the music of Andrew Norman, Thomas Adès and Peter Eötvös this season. On March 9, Lionel Bringuier conducts Eötvös' Snatches of a Conversation and Sonata per sei. On April 8, 9 and 10, Thomas Adès appears as featured guest conductor as he leads the orchestra through performances of his Concerto for Violin featuring violinist Anthony Marwood, the Suite from his opera Powder Her Face, and These Premises are Alarmed. Finally, on May 4 musicians from the LA Philharmonic perform Andrew Norman's work for eight violins Gran Turismo.

Alvin Singleton

Michael Morgan leads the Alabama Symphony Orchestra through Alvin Singleton's 56 Blows (quis Custodiet Custodes?) on January 17.

Sir Michael Tippett

The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, alongside the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus and the Saint Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus, perform Tippett's monumental oratorio A Child of Our Time on October 23 and 25. On April 1, 3 and 6, Mark Elder leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through Tippett's Concerto for Double String Orchestra.

Mark-Anthony Turnage

Cliff Colnot leads musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through Turnage's Twice Through the Heart, a dramatic scena for mezzo-soprano and 16 players, on November 23.

Peteris Vasks

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, led by Andrey Boreyko, performs Peteris Vasks' Musica dolorosa for string orchestra on October 29, 30 and 31.

Kurt Weill

The music of Kurt Weill continues to see non-stop performances by ensembles around the globe. Here are just a few featured events happening in North America this season:

• The Threepenny Opera at The Juilliard School, directed by Sam Gold, December 10-14

• The Seven Deadly Sins at the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anne Manson, and featuring soprano Measha Brueggergosman, January 6

• Walt Whitman Songs at the Pacific Symphony, conducted by Carl St. Clair, February 4-6

• The Seven Deadly Sins at Alberta Ballet, conducted by Peter Dala and featuring soprano Patricia O'Callaghan, Calgary, March 25-27; Edmonton, April 9-10

• Violin Concerto performed by violinist Soovin Kim and the Curtis Chamber Orchestra at the Curtis Institute, Philadelphia, conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero, April 21

• The Seven Deadly Sins at Santa Rosa Symphony, conducted by Bruno Ferrandis and featuring soprano Ute Lemper and the Hudson Shad vocal quartet, May 8-10

• The Seven Deadly Sins at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Mark Russell Smith and featuring soprano Kelley O'Connor, Minneapolis, MN, May 23; Stillwater, MN, May 20 and Eden Prairie, MN, May 21

• Across the Atlantic, the piano version of Weill's Walt Whitman Songs was recently performed at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg festival (Germany) featuring tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake on September 7.

Jörg Widmann

The Cleveland Orchestra presents Widmann's Chor (led by Franz Welser-Möst on October 15, 17, 18) Con Brio (led by Jonathan Nott on November 19, 20 21) and Armonica (under Welser-Möst on March 6). Also this season, the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and Joana Carneiro perform Con Brio on April 1.

Frank Zappa

The music of Frank Zappa travels all over the world this season including stops at the Toronto Philharmonia, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
