Joint Project by Jörg Widmann and Anselm Kiefer at the Paris Opéra Bastille

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Opéra Bastille in Paris, Jörg Widmann, together with the Anselm Kiefer, one of the most distinguished European artists, has designed a 'scenic installation' which bears the title "Am Anfang (Au commencement)" ("In the Beginning"). Apocalyptic texts from Jeremiah and Isaiah are combined with sections of several works by Widmann, the action taking place in a room designed by Kiefer. Performed by the orchestra of the Opéra National de Paris under te direction of the composer, Widmann’s piece Armonica plays a pivotal role.

Kiefer first rejected when he was asked to create an opera production. "But then I met Jörg and he was the right composer for this kind of project. The collaboration was so fruitful that I decided to accept the commission by the Bastille Opera. It was an enormous challenge. Normally, I am alone in my studio, maybe with one or two assistants. But this time I am working with so many people. In my imagination the whole Bastille Opera is my studio now and one thing is clear: If I may use the complete building, I am going to do that." (Kiefer)

"Am Anfang" will be premiered on 7 July 2009. Soloists are Geneviève Boivin (speaker), Christa Schönfeldinger (glass harmonica) and Teodoro Anzellott (akkordion). Last but not least Jörg Widmann is not only composing and conducting but will also play the solo part of his clarinet concerto Elegie which is part of the evening. Further performances of "Am Anfang" will take place on 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, and 14 Juli.
