After hearing the Concierto de Aranjuez for guitar I thought it would be a great idea to have him write a flute concerto. He wrote the Concierto Pastoral and it is one of the most outstandingconcertos of the century. I am happy to be able to pay tribute to a great man who has enriched not only the music of the flute and the concerto repertoire but who wrote music depicting the heart of Spain.

Rodrigo’s birthplace, Valencia, will mark the 10th anniversary in October with the spectacular new Palau de les Arts offering 4 days of events focusing on Rodrigo, accompanied by a monthlong exposition. In July SONY Records will launch a commemorative edition of Rodrigo recordings, with artists such as Teresa Berganza, Montserrat Caballé, Julian Lloyd Webber, Narciso Yepes, Agustín León Ara and many others. The International Guitar Festival of Cordoba, Spain, will dedicate study sessions to Rodrigo’s
guitar works and a special exposition will be on view in July.

Another series of events in tribute to Joaquín Rodrigo will take place in and around London in October and in Prague in November with a series of recitals by the First Prizewinners of the IV Rodrigo International Piano and Violin Competition as well as conference presented by Cecilia Rodrigo together with the guitarist Carlos Bonell. In November, the four Rodrigo guitar concertos will be performed in one concert by guitarists and the Iuventus Orchestra of the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Oviedo, Spain will present six concerts for children based on a stage production with musical fragments recounting the life story of Joaquín Rodrigo.
