Charlie Mariano Died at Age 85
Charlie Mariano had fought his cancer for a long time, yet lost the battle on 16 June 2009 at the age of 85. His death is mourned by all who knew him. He had been an active musician as long as he could. The adopted country of the US American who had played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie was Germany (city of Cologne). The other adopted country was India where he had often lived and worked for months.
As a consequence, he became known not only because of his collaboration with the great jazz musicians mentioned above or with German artists and bands (such as Dieter Ilg or Herbert Grönemeyer) but also because of his profound knowledge of and deep attachment to Indian music. Numerous albums have been released on the labels MPS, Enja, Jazz4Ever, INTUITION and Double Moon Records among others.
We bow down in reverence for a great artist and person.
