Work of the Week - Franz Liszt / Stephan Heucke: Concero pathétique

Great events are often foreshadowed: although Franz Liszt's 200th anniversary takes place in 2011, this week will see a remarkable tribute to the grandmaster of the piano. On April 8th, the Stuttgart Philharmonic will present the world premiere of Liszt's Concerto pathétique in an arrangement for two pianos and orchestra by German composer Stefan Heucke, under the direction of Gabriel Feltz. Soloists include Andreas Grau and Götz Schumacher, who are known worldwide as the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo.
This arrangement is close to the original but brings in some new elements: Heucke added a modern orchestra and a contemporary way of instrumentation to Liszt's version for two pianos. The new spectacular cadenza is one of the strongest connecting elements between the sonic worlds of these two composers.
Concerto pathétique was commissioned by the Stuttgart Philharmonic and is exclusive to the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo, but not to the orchestra. If you are interested in adding this exciting piece to your program, please contact Schott Music, and we will be happy to assist in liaising with the pianists.
