Steve Martland - World Premiere
Steve Martland’s new work, Darwin, will receive its world premiere this week on Thursday 19th March at St. Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London. Commissioned by JAM (John Armatage Memorial), the 15 minute work for SATB choir, brass quintet and organ powerfully set’s lines from Charles Darwin’s Origin of the Species alongside text from a letter written to Charles by his wife, Emma, written in 1839.
Martland desicribes the work, which conincides with the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth, as a celebration of the devotion between the couple despite Emma’s religious beliefs and Charles’ growing agnosticism.
“…endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful … belong to each other forever”
C. Darwin / E. Darwin
Darwin will be performed by The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College Cambridge; Onyx Brass, Daniel Cook (organ) and conducted by Nicholas Cleobury at St. Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, London on 19th March and Manchester Cathedral on 20th March.
