Gavin Bryars – The Invention of Tradition
From Monday 24th November, Bath Spa University will host a three-day celebration of the music of Gavin Bryars. Six individual concerts have been programmed including a performance by the Gavin Bryars Ensemble with tenor John Potter and the BSU chorus on Tuesday 25th November at Bath Abbey.
The Sinking of the Titanic, one of the composer's most moving works will open the series at St. Michaels Without in a unique performance by the BSU Chamber Ensemble and children from St Saviour’s Infant School conducted by Roger Heaton.
Event number two will feature some of Bryars’ early experimental works including Far Away and Dimly Pealing which requires that a sound be produced one mile away from the performer yet still be audible to them (click here to read more about their “mile of string”).
The series will close on Wednesday 26th evening with a free even featuring musicologist Bob Gilmore of Brunel University in conversation with the composer.
Bryars has recently been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Bath Spa University in recognition of his immense contribution to not just contemporary music, but also to the vigour, breadth and dept of the arts in general.
