Work of the Week - Krzysztof Penderecki: Concerto per corno e orchestra

The impressive list of works by Krzysztof Penderecki, who will celebrate his 75th birthday on 23 November, includes a considerable number of instrumental concertos, including those for piano, violin, viola, cello, flute and clarinet.
Curiously, he had not written a concerto for a brass instrument, but this gap in his output is now closed with his Concerto per corno e orchestra. On 5 May Penderecki himself will conduct the world première with the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra and soloist Radovan Vlatkovic. His short Adagietto from the opera Paradise Lost in the version for cor anglais and string orchestra (2006-7) will be performed in the same concert, with Daisuke Nagaoka on the cor anglais.

World première:
5 May 2008 · Bremen (D) Die Glocke, Großer Saal · Bremer Philharmoniker · Conductor Krzysztof Penderecki · Radovan Vlatkovic, horn

Further performances with Radovan Vlatkovic and Krzysztof Penderecki:
6 May: Bremen
23 May: Taipei (TW) National Symphony Orchestra
25 June: Tokyo (J) Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra
30 June: Osaka (J) Century Orchestra Osaka
31 January 2009: San Sebastián (E) Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi
