Anthony Gilbert:
Mozart Sampler with Ground |
In the concerts of the New Elbland Philharmony on 17-24 September an uncommon Mozart-hommage is going to be performed: Commissioned by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1991 for the bicentenary of Mozart’s death, the 10-minute orchestral piece Mozart Sampler with Ground is a gentle reflection upon sampled passages from the G-minor Symphony KV 550 – predominantly the Andante. A ground-line is formed from the sequence of pitch-letters in Mozart’s given names: Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Theophilus, and is decorated by the Mozart and other related material. The ‘sampler’ in the title refers as much to this process as to the traditional exercise in decorative embroidery particularly fashionable in Mozart’s time.
