Jörg Widmann's "Eleven Humoresques" Receives World Premiere by Yefim Bronfman at Carnegie Hall

Jörg Widmann's new piano work Eleven Humoresques sees its world premiere this month performed by Yefim Bronfman on his solo piano recital at Carnegie Hall. Since the time of Robert Schumann, the literary genre of the humorous sketch has turned into a cheerful, often subtly ironic and usually small musical form. Jörg Widmann, an ardent admirer and, in many respects, a living embodiment of the Romantic composer, wrote his Eleven Humoresques in the spirit of Schumann. He says about the pieces:

'The different forms of humour (or even its absence) have their different counterparts in the great variety of the musical forms, from the miniature to the fully developed, complex piano piece. I hope the performer will discover the characteristic tone of each piece and express this with a touch of mockery here, a dry touch there, and a touch of melancholy, yet always with humour and subtlety.'

The world premiere of Widmann's Eleven Humoresques, commissioned by the Carnegie Hall Corporation, takes place on Sunday, May 4 in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium.
