John Casken - World Premiére

On 31st March, John Casken's latest orchestral work, Concerto for Orchestra, will be premiéred by the Mannheim Nationaltheater-Orchester conducted by Friedemann Layer at the Rosengarten in Mannheim, Germany.  A second performance will take place at the same venue the following day.

The twenty minute work continues Casken's interest in two-movement forms which he began with his Cello Concerto (1991) and went on to develop in Sortilége (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004).  Solo outbursts from the woodwind, echo figuration, expressive duets and a dramatic climatic sequence of swirling flourishes towards the end of the second movement promises to make Casken's new work an important addition to the contemporary orchestral repertoire.

Casken's future projects include The Dream of the Rood, a work for Ensemble 10/10 and The Hilliard Ensemble which will be premiered in October 2008.
Concerto for Orcestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie of the Mannheim Nationaltheater Orchester.

Deutschlandradio Kultur will be streaming it's live broadcast of Concerto for Orchestra over the internet on 1st April at 19.00h.  http://www.dradio.de/dkultur
