Discovering Dutilleux

Henri DutilleuxFrench composer, Henri Dutilleux, will be the focus a weekend festival in Cardiff from the 15th to 17th February. Discovering Dutilleux 2008 is the result of a partnership between the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Cardiff University School of Music and will explore the composer’s music through a number of concerts and talks. One of the highlights will be a performance of Correspondances for soprano and orchestra by the BBC NOW with their principle guest conductor Jac van Steen and soloist Barbara Hannigan in St. David’s Hall on Friday 15th February at 19.30

The composer is expected in Cardiff over the weekend and it has also been announced that Dutilleux will be presented an Honorary Degree by Cardiff University during the festival. This will be the first time that a French composer has received such an award from Cardiff University.

"I was overwhelmed by this new colour and sound which opened up a whole new world of music to me. Though there were integral parts to the music following the styles of Debussy and Ravel I found the music by Dutilleux provided an exciting sound world that whilst still personal and comfortable, blew me away. Each note thet Dutilleux has written in his work is excellently crafted with incredible detail and resonance. We have programmed this festival for the Orchestra out of a passion for the composer's work rather than for an anniversary or birthday. The weekend will showcase this great music in the hope that others will also enjoy experiencing this new world and have their musical horizons broadened to the pieces and the composer's life to make for a really exciting event" (Tim Thorne - BBC National Orchestra of Wales' Senior Producer www.bbc.co.uk/wales/now).

Dutileux will be returning to the UK in April for another celebration of his music, this time in London at the Wigmore Hall on the 2nd April.
