"1001 Nights in the Harem" - Fazil Say's first violin concerto
It could be said that Fazil Say’s success as a composer has been inseparably bound up with his appearance as a charismatic pianist – until now. His Piano Concertos and other largescale works such as the Nazim oratorio have extremely demanding and very individual solo piano roles. If, as in his Violin Sonata, another instrument stands in the limelight. Say himself still enjoys playing the accompaniment, and has performed this piece regularly with Patricia Kopachinskaya for years. Now, Say gives up with the role of performer: for Patricia Kopachinskaya, he has written his first violin concerto. "1001 Nights in the Harem" is the name of his contribution to the programme entitled ‘Exoticism and Eroticism’, commissioned by Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. In "1001 Nights in the Harem", Say dares to bridge the gap between the music of his Turkish home country and European art music in a completely new way. And he will be in the audience for the world première with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Axelrod on 20th February.
