Martland in Scotland
Steve Martland's new work for string orchestra, Eternity's Sunrise, will be one of the highlights in the Scottish Ensembles' first concert tour of 2008. The work will be premiered on Wednesday 6th February in Perth and then toured around Scotland to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen over the following five days.Steve Martland's music has been performed by the Scottish Ensemble on a number of occasions and there is much admiration between both composer and ensemble. “Steve Martland is that rare artist – an all-round performer, composer and educator for whom boundaries do not apply,” says Jonathan Morton, artistic director of the Scottish Ensemble. “There is a real synergy with his approach and the ethos of the Scottish Ensemble, which is why were keen to commission a new piece from Steve. His music is great fun, full of energy, drive and joy, and we are looking forward to sharing this new commission with our audiences.” (scottishensemble.co.uk)
Eternity’s Sunrise is scored for strings with left and right violins and is a companion piece for Martland's Tiger Dancing which was written for the choreographer Henri Oguike and his company. Whilst Eternity’s Sunrise was written for the concert hall rather than the theatre, dance remains a strong feature of the music with rhythmic unison uniting the ensemble throughout.
