Fazil Say Receives Silver London International Award

Fazil Say has recently been awarded a Silver prize in the "Original Music Scoring" category at the London International Awards for his piano work Black Earth. The piece was used in the commercial Symphony in Red for the Dortmund Concert Hall, produced by the Hamburg-based agency Jung von Matt.

The Dortmund Concert hall is well known for its innovative advertising campaigns and with the renowned Jung von Matt agency they've developed effective strategies of approaching new audiences. The commercial, which visualises Say's music, also won a Silver prize in the "Computer Animation" category. Say is currently the exclusive artist of the Dortmund Concert Hall and will be performing in nine concerts spread over three seasons.

Black Earth is one Say's most well known compositions and effectively fuses Turkish folk music with both Romantic and Jazz inspired material. Say, who in addition to being a composer is also a piano virtuoso, has performed this work to both classical and jazz audiences to great acclaim. Particularly effective, especially in the more folk-like sections, is how he conveys the improvisatory freedom which is inherent to both jazz and folk music.
