Valentin Silvestrov 70 – new CD with ECM Records

On 30.9.2007 the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov turns 70. He ranks among the most important international composers of the former Soviet Union and is regarded as one of the leading representatives of the ‘Kiev avant-garde’. Until the 1980s, Silvestrov's works were heard and well-received almost exclusively abroad. Then his growing international success as well as changes in the political atmosphere made performances in his home country possible. Around this time his musical language changed: whilst not abandoning his old structures and modes of expression, since the 1980’s he views his music as a ‘postlude’ to the existing musical tradition.

Apart from numerous piano works and a comprehensive oeuvre in the field of vocal music, the monolithic series of seven symphonies forms the central core of his output. It is in particular the nine-movement Symphony No. 5 from 1982 that expresses Silvestrov's aesthetic approach. This masterpiece is one of the most important contributions to symphonic music at the end of the 20th century. At present, Silvestrov is working on his Symphony No. 8.

For several years, ECM Records has been committed to Silvestrov and his music. On the occasion of his birthday ECM have released the CD Bagatellen und Serenaden (ECM New Series 1988 – CD 4766178) with chamber music and works for string orchestra by Silvestrov.

Exclusively published by the music publishing house M.P. Belaieff, Silvestrov's works are represented by Schott Music worldwide.
