Herbert Willi - Composer in Residence at the Pacific Music Festival

The Pacific Music Festival Sapporo was founded in 1990 by Leonard Bernstein as an international music festival with academy for the further encouragement of young musicians. Since then, concerts as well as chamber music, orchestral music and composition courses with prominent teachers have been held in Sapporo every year. This year, the Austrian composer Herbert Willi has been invited to give a master class, and his music is included in various orchestra and ensemble concerts.

Among the works to be performed are the trumpet concerto Eirene (2001) and the clarinet concerto ego eimi (2006) from the cycle Montafon as well as the two-movement chamber concerto Für 16. Willi has maintained strong connections with Asia for some time. As the Korean daily newspaper ”Hanguk Ilbo” described him: ‘He is, without doubt, a man from the West, but he
seems to understand the Eastern, Asian mentality like no other.’
